Green County Schools is moving forward with a series of athletic facility improvements after approval from the Green County Board of Education, with projects aimed at enhancing the experience for students, athletes, and the community.
Among the key upgrades are new restroom and storage facilities at the district’s tennis courts, along with a new concession stand at Dragon Stadium that will also include public restrooms. The new concession area will feature a designated changing space for game officials.
District leaders emphasized that current restrooms and the existing concession stand at Dragon Stadium will remain in place. The new construction is intended to expand and improve amenities rather than replace them.
Additional improvements at Dragon Stadium will include terraced concrete seating areas designed for portable chairs. These seating sections will be built in two locations—near the current bleachers and along the end zone next to the Area Technology Center—to provide more flexible and comfortable viewing options for fans.
The board is also considering an additional project that would further enhance the stadium: a new fieldhouse featuring player changing areas and added storage space.
Superintendent Will Hodges said the improvements go beyond athletics. “These projects are about more than facilities. They are about creating a better experience for our students, our families, and our community,” Hodges said. “We are committed to providing spaces that reflect the pride we have in our schools and the support we have for our students.”
Renderings from the project architect show a consistent design that matches existing district facilities while adding modern, functional space for both athletes and spectators.
The next phase of the project will be the bidding process, with construction bids expected to be released in May and opened in June. Preliminary estimates place the total cost of the projects at around $4 million, including the optional fieldhouse.
Estimated costs include approximately $500,000 for the tennis court facility, $900,000 for the Dragon Stadium concession and restroom project, and $750,000 for sidewalks, stairs, and seating platforms. The proposed fieldhouse carries an estimated cost of about $1.35 million, pending final approval after bids are received.
District Finance Officer Zachary Leftwich said the district is well-positioned to fund the improvements. The project will be financed through bonds, with repayment supported by state-provided capital outlay and building funds.
Construction timelines will be finalized after the bidding process, but officials expect the new concrete seating areas to be completed before the start of football season in August. Other portions of the project are expected to continue into 2027.
Board Chair Marcy Goff said the upgrades reflect a long-standing goal for the district.
“For decades, our community has talked about the need for these improvements, and it is exciting to see that vision come to life,” Goff said. “This is an investment that will serve our students, families, and community for many years to come.”
