Each summer, all Kentucky sports teams observe the KHSAA Dead Period, a mandatory break established by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. This year, the Dead Period runs from June 25 at 12:01 a.m. through July 9 at 11:59 p.m.
During this two-week period, no athletic activity is permitted between student-athletes and school-affiliated personnel. The rules apply to all sports and activities at the middle and high school levels.
What’s not allowed during the Dead Period:
- No communication between coaches and student-athletes (including in-person, phone, text, or social media).
- No practices, workouts, or team meetings — whether formal or informal.
- No use of school facilities or equipment for athletic purposes, including uniforms, gyms, fields, or weight rooms.
- No team-related events, such as fundraisers, camps, open gyms, or conditioning sessions.
- No team travel or organized group athletic activities.
The purpose of the Dead Period is to provide student-athletes with a genuine break from school sports, allowing time for rest, recovery, and personal time with family and friends.
Enjoy the time off, Dragons — we’ll see you back, stronger and recharged.
