House Passes Measure To Support Farmers And Streamline Deer Damage Tags

Frankfort, Kentucky (March 4, 2026) – Legislation aimed at helping farmers and land owners expediate the process for a deer destruction tag to reduce overall deer population and property damage was passed in the House. HB 142, sponsored by Representative Michael “Sarge” Pollock of Campbellsville, would allow farmers to better control the deer population on their land and reduce damages caused by deer.

“Kentucky farmers work hard to protect their land, their livelihoods, and the food supply we all depend on,” said Pollock. “This bill cuts red tape and gives farmers and landowners a fair, timely process to address serious deer damage.”

This measure would provide a time frame and ensure that within 15 days of filing a request, the department inspects and confirms the alleged damage. Upon confirmation, the department would issue at minimum five deer destruction tags each year for two years. This legislation would allow farmers to be granted renewal of their tags if there is evidence of continued damage to the land or personal property.

“When deer overpopulation destroys crops and property, farmers shouldn’t be stuck waiting while the damage continues,” Pollock added. “HB 142 puts common sense back into the process and gives farmers the tools they need to protect what they’ve built.”

HB 142 will now move to the Senate for consideration. For more information on HB 142, please visit legislature.ky.gov.
