“There has been a notable rise in dog bites within Green County over recent months. In light of this trend and to address common misconceptions, we’d like to outline the protocol following a dog bite.
First, if the bite results in a bleeding wound that appears serious, medical attention should be sought immediately. Following this, the hospital will submit all pertinent information to the Lake Cumberland Health Department. As per Kentucky law, a dog involved in a biting incident must be quarantined away from other animals and people for a specified period. This requirement can be fulfilled in one of two ways: at-home quarantine with strict adherence to isolation guidelines or placement in a shelter for ten days, during which our shelter will charge a daily fee.
Throughout the quarantine, checks will be conducted to ensure the dog shows no signs of rabies. Should anything happen to the dog during quarantine for instance the dog runs away, the owner could be held financially responsible for rabies shots if needed by the bite victim whichcan be very costly upwards of $10000.
After the quarantine period concludes, the dog can be retrieved. Note that the quarantine fulfillment does not impact potential civil litigation between the dog owner and the victim.
